To make a day of it

Château de la Tour-Daniel stands in Coubon (Haute-Loire), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 14th century, 16th century, 17th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

Overlooking an old crossing point of the Loire on the road to Le Puy, this castle at Coubon brings together three distinct building periods: a 14th century keep in black basalt, an L shaped residence from the 16th century, and a classical gallery from the 17th century flanked by two turrets. Its entrance façade, set between two older towers, stands out for its stonework of alternating studs and diamond points, a pattern recalling Spanish Renaissance façades. Inside, fireplaces carved with scenes from the life of Christ and Renaissance carved doors survive.
