In Pontgouin, Eure et Loir, the château de la Rivière retains the look of a fortified seventeenth century residence, built for the d'Aligre family who owned it for three centuries. Chancellor Étienne d'Aligre completed the construction there after his fall from favour, exiled by order of Richelieu in 1626. Visitors find a courtyard lined with matching outbuildings, a gatehouse flanked by towers, dry moats where the drawbridges once stood, and grounds crossed by the Eure river following an eighteenth century layout.
