To make a day of it

Château de la Madeleine stands in Loireauxence (Loire-Atlantique), in the Pays de la Loire region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: third quarter of the 19th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

At Loireauxence, facing the abbey of Saint-Florent-le-Vieil, the Château de la Madeleine stands above the Loire valley within an eighteen-hectare walled park. Built in the 1860s for railway entrepreneur François Briau, it takes the shape of an Italian-style villa, with brick and limestone walls and low rooflines. The grounds also hold the ruins of the earlier medieval castle, together with a 19th-century orangery and farm buildings.
