What the French Ministry of Culture records

L'édifice fut bâti à l'emplacement d'un ancien château-fort rasé vers 1112 sur ordre de Louis VI le Gros, lors des luttes contre Foulques IV le Haineux, comte d'Anjou, et les seigneurs bandits d'Ile de France. En 1417, lors de la guerre de Cent ans, le château fut fortifié par les partisans du roi pour participer à la ligne de positions avancées protégeant Orléans des Anglais. Après les destructions de la guerre de Cent ans, puis des guerres de Religion, l'édifice est reconstruit vers 1585. Il se compose d'un corps de bâtiment rectangulaire, flanqué côté nord d'étroits pavillons. Côté sud, il est accosté de deux tours aménagées aux 17e et 18e siècles, vestiges de l'ancien château-fort. Des traces des anciennes douves sont conservées au nord et à l'ouest. La façade nord offre un aspect très caractéristique de l'architecture du 17e siècle. Un ensemble de communs subsiste à l'ouest.
