What the French Ministry of Culture records

Château construit au 14e siècle, puis remanié au cours des siècles, au-dessus d'un site creusé de grottes à priori occupées depuis le paléolithique supérieur. En 1792, l'édifice est vendu comme bien national. Deux restaurations complètes ont été menées, l'une en 1887 par l'architecte Ch. Roques, l'autre de 1893 à 1906 par Auguste Martin. Une petite aile au sud ainsi que trois tours, s'articulent sur le corps de logis principal de la fin du Moyen Age, marqué par les interventions néo-gothiques de style Troubadour. Plus au sud, une chapelle à nef unique fut construite au 15e ou début du 16e siècle. Un grand mur d'enceinte et une porte monumentale contrôlaient le flanc sud-ouest de la falaise. Ce mur formait un angle et se prolongeait vers le nord en intégrant une tour ronde. A l'ouest subsistent également les restes d'une tour massive.
