To make a day of it

Château de la Chapoulie stands in Peyrignac (Dordogne), in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 15th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

Built during the Hundred Years' War, Château de la Chapoulie bears the marks of its past as a fortress contested between the French and English. Two adjoined towers, one round and one more slender, form the heart of the structure: the first served as living quarters, the second housed the staircase. Machicolations defended the openings. The site grew over the centuries with windows, pediment dormers and outbuildings.

Frequently asked

Why are the two towers so different?
The round tower served as the main residence while the more slender tower contained the staircase and small service rooms. Together they formed a defensive stronghold rather than a complete aristocratic residence.
What defensive features remain?
Two machicolations, stone structures with apertures, once protected the entrance to the staircase tower and the north access of the main tower.
Is the dovecote part of the castle?
Located about fifty metres to the south, this octagonal 18th-century building enjoys the same historical protection as the castle itself.
