To make a day of it

Château de l'île de Berder stands in Larmor-Baden (Morbihan), in the Bretagne region of France. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Berder Island, one of the four islands belonging to the commune of Larmor-Baden in the Gulf of Morbihan, can be reached at low tide via a causeway open to both pedestrians and vehicles. Privately owned, the island can only be explored along its outer edge, a walking circuit of roughly 2.6 km through vegetation unusual for the region, including palms and conifers planted during the late 19th century under Count Arthur Dillon. At the southern tip, the view opens onto the Jument current, among the strongest in Europe. The island's buildings and its Sainte-Anne chapel remain private and are not open to visitors.

What to know

  • The island can only be reached at low tide, via a causeway that is covered by the sea the rest of the time.
  • Walking around the outer edge of the island covers about 2.6 km and takes roughly an hour.
  • Only the island's perimeter is open to the public; the buildings and chapel remain private.
  • Crossing times vary with tides and wind conditions, so check them before visiting.
