What the French Ministry of Culture records

Bâti au 12e siècle, le château fut rasé en 1254 par Henri III, roi d'Angleterre. L'édifice est reconstruit au 14e siècle. Les comtes de Foix-Gurçon tinrent la seigneurie jusqu'au 18e siècle. C'est à l'une des comtesses, Diane de Foix-Cancale, que Montaigne dédia le chapitre des Essais "De l'institution des enfants". Le château reçut les visites de Henri III et Henri IV. Dès la Révolution, le château tombe en ruines. De cette demeure, il reste d'importantes ruines : remparts, châtelet d'entrée effondré, tours, escalier de pierre.
