In the Périgord noir, the château de Grateloup stands on the northern slope of a hill above the Caudeau valley, reached by an avenue of century-old plane trees. Built on the site of a former fortified house, it developed over the centuries into a main residence flanked by two pavilions, surrounded by outbuildings and a chapel. The site is chiefly known as the home of the philosopher Maine de Biran, whose desk and writing case are kept in the eastern pavilion.
