To make a day of it

Château de Château-Renault stands in Château-Renault (Indre-et-Loire), in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 12th century, 14th century, 17th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

On a promontory above the Brenne valley, at the heart of the town of Château-Renault, stands a cylindrical keep raised around 1140 for the count of Blois, after an earlier stronghold dating from the early 11th century burned down. Around it remain a masonry enclosure, a manor house reworked over the centuries, corner turrets and a gatehouse flanked by two round towers. The site traces eight centuries of family succession, from the counts of Blois to the marquis of Château-Renault and later the Calmon family, through building campaigns spanning the 12th to the 18th century.

What to know

  • The 12th-century keep and part of the outbuildings are protected as historic monuments.
  • The site sits on a raised terrace reached from the town, involving walking on sloped ground.
  • The ruined north wing of the manor house, the castle mound and the fixed bridge are part of the protected ensemble but stand in a partly ruined state.
  • No opening hours, admission fees or accessibility details are available in the verified data, so it is worth checking in advance.
