To make a day of it

Château de Chabanoles stands in Retournac (Haute-Loire), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 15th century, 16th century, 17th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.

In Retournac, in the Haute-Loire department, the château de Chabanoles is a small medieval fortified house with an almost square main building, flanked by two round towers and two corner turrets of which only the corbels remain. The entrance doorway stands out, bearing classical decoration added in the early 17th century: pilasters, a carved lintel with religious monograms, and a triangular pediment. Four corbels carved with human and animal figures, remnants of a former defensive bretèche, overhang this entrance. Inside, panelling and painted decor have survived.
