Château de Boisgibault stands in Ardon (Loiret), in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 17th century, 19th century). The building is privately owned and no visits are on record.
Boisgibault Castle, rebuilt from 1680 on the site of a 16th-century manor, embodies the type of hunting lodge that Sologne produced for its landed gentry. Its architecture, with an elongated main body flanked by two pavilions and lower wings arranged in a courtyard, displays deliberate restraint: no ornamental facades, but a balanced and authentic plan. The estate expanded considerably over the centuries, growing from 75 hectares in the 16th century to nearly 3,000 by the 18th, before becoming one of the region's most prestigious hunting reserves in the 19th century.
What to know
- The chapel integrated into the castle dates from 1756, as do the fine wrought-iron gate that closes the courtyard and the interior fittings of the ground floor.
- The decoration of the main rooms, including the staircase with its wrought-iron banister, spans three centuries, from the late 17th to the early 20th century.
- The Marquis de Gasville, who acquired the estate in 1829, had a square pavilion called the Telegraph built, equipped with a platform allowing hunters to be signaled the direction of game through mechanized arm movements.
- The park was once surrounded by a palisade over a kilometre long and pierced by large radiating avenues, characteristic of the layout of hunting reserves in Sologne.
