Ce vestige était le portail de l'ancienne prestrière du chapitre cathédral de Chartres, dont l'ensemble de l'édifice a presque entièrement disparu. La partie conservée comprend le piedroit de l'arc et l'amorce du voûtement (en pierre de taille et blocage de moellons) , un mur perpendiculaire de stabilisation (en moellons) , et une échauguette circulaire en surlplomb sur l'angle (en briques). Le cul de lampe est sculpté de lions et de putti en pierre. L'artiste a parfaitement réussi la difficile jonction entre un soubassement rectangulaire et une construction circulaire. Il a équilibré sa composition de part et d'autre de l'axe central.
