In the Gers département, the château d'Avensac combines the remains of a 14th century fortress with a residence rebuilt around 1830. From the medieval structure survive a keep standing above an entrance postern and a thick defensive wall now incorporated into the later buildings. The 19th century facade, with a single upper storey, overlooks two terraces cut into the hillside and continues into two symmetrical wings enclosing a courtyard closed off by a wrought iron gate.
