In Gouffern en Auge, in the Orne department, the old château of Aubry-en-Exmes stands on the remains of a circular 14th century keep, once an outpost in the defensive line of the Exmes stronghold. Partly demolished under Henri IV and rebuilt around 1615, the building combines its round base with a square block topped by turrets and machicolations. A newer residence, erected nearby in 1808, led to the gradual abandonment of this former seigneurial dwelling.
