Les ruines se limitent aux deux angles en forme de tour de l'ancien donjon entre lesquels subsistent les mâchicoulis du chemin de ronde, et la base d'une tour d'angle de l'enceinte. Siège de la seconde baronnie d'Auvergne, le château fut construit vers la fin du 14e siècle sur un plan comportant trois enceintes fortifiées. L'édifice a soutenu plusières sièges pendant la guerre de Cent ans et contre la Ligue en 1593. Il a été incendié le 15 novembre 1698. Propriété communale après la Révolution, il a servi de carrière de matériaux de construction.
