What the French Ministry of Culture records
La création d’un évêché à Sarlat remonte à 1317. Le premier évêque du diocèse, Raymond de Roquecorn, prend ses fonctions le 2 juillet 1318. Les premiers évêques de Sarlat ne disposent cependant pas encore d’un palais épiscopal et doivent se contenter d’un ancien logis d’abbé. Dans la seconde moitié du XVème siècle, ce dernier est pourvu d’une tour d’escalier. Cependant, c’est entre la fin du XVème siècle et le début du XVIème qu’un nouveau palais épiscopal est véritablement édifié. L’édifice est par la suite agrandi à la fin du XVIIème siècle. Avec la Révolution, le palais épiscopal accueille l’Hôtel de Ville ainsi que le siège de la police et une prison. Puis, l’Hôtel de Ville ayant déménagé en 1900, on installa un marché couvert au rez-de-chaussée de l’édifice et un théâtre à son premier étage. On peut également dater de cette époque la loggia couronnant sa façade Nord. Depuis cette époque, l’ancien palais épiscopal a encore changé d’attribution et accueille désormais l’office du tourisme et des salles d’exposition.
