Wassenberg stands in Wasserbourg (Haut-Rhin), in the Grand Est region of France. No visits are on record for this building.
Perched on a rocky spur on the north side of the Krebsbach valley, at an altitude of 740 metres, Wassenberg castle overlooks the village of Wasserbourg, which takes its name from it. Built around 1220 by Andreas de Girsberg on land belonging to the abbey of Payerne and the chapter of Constance, this fortress reflects the rivalries between local lords during the clearing of this side valley in the 13th century. Passed down to the Hattstatt family and later the Ribeaupierre, the castle disappears from historical records after 1429, likely destroyed in an explosion. Almost no visible remains survive above ground today, but earthworks still allow the layout of the site to be traced, from the pentagonal keep to the outer bailey.
