To make a day of it
Petit-Wasigenstein stands in Niedersteinbach (Bas-Rhin), in the Grand Est region of France. Admission is free. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Petit-Wasigenstein, also known as Nouveau-Wasigenstein, is one of two ruined castles standing side by side on a rocky outcrop near Niedersteinbach in the northern Vosges. Built at the end of the thirteenth century by two brothers at odds with the family occupying the neighbouring rock, it was required by their peace agreement to remain lower than the older stronghold. Reached on foot, the site is linked to the medieval legend of Walther of Aquitaine, said to have fought a famous battle on this very rock.
What to know
- The site can only be reached on foot, via a marked path of about 0.4 km from the parking area on the road between Obersteinbach and Niedersteinbach.
- One window in the ruined hall has no railing, so visitors should take extra care there.
- The surroundings may occasionally be affected by hunting activity, particularly in autumn, or by forestry work.
- There are no set opening hours or fees, as the ruin stands in open natural surroundings.
