Domaine de Charance stands in Gap (Hautes-Alpes), in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of France. The building is registered as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 18th century, 19th century). Admission is free. Perched above Gap, the Charance estate retains traces of a bishops' château reshaped over several centuries, surrounded by a park and terraced gardens laid out from the 18th century onward. The site combines built heritage and preserved nature: terraced gardens, a rose garden and an alpine garden. Today it serves as much as a place for walking as for heritage visits, at the foot of the Charance peak.

What to know
- The terraced garden is open freely every day from April to the end of October.
- A free bus line connects Gap town centre to the estate in July and August.
- Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a leash, as numerous streams and water points cross the grounds.
- Climbing to the Charance peak from the estate requires physical effort and counts as a proper hike.
- An information point is located at the estate's car park in July and August.
- The château cannot be visited inside; only the gardens and park are open to walk through.
- The terraced garden, awarded the 'Jardin remarquable' label, spans about 9,000 m² with box, roses and a kitchen garden.
- The park surrounds a lake, with cascades, canals and a former boat house, reaching up to the Canal de Gap at around 1,100 metres altitude.
