To make a day of it

Château d'Avignon stands in Les Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer (Bouches-du-Rhône), in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region of France. The building is listed as a historic monument (dating recorded in the Mérimée database: 18th century). Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

In the Camargue, in the town of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, the château d'Avignon stands on an estate that originated as an 18th-century farmhouse. Bought in 1893 by the merchant Louis Noilly-Prat, the whole property was remodelled inside and extended with outbuildings reflecting late 19th-century technical comfort: pumping station, boiler house, electricity, telephone. The park, ponds and irrigation channels around it tell as much about the region's farming past as about a wealthy family residence.
