To make a day of it

Wasserburg Alt Barenaue stands in Bramsche (Landkreis Osnabrück), in Lower Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Wasserburg Alt Barenaue stands on a sand island at the edge of the Großes Moor, at the foot of the Kalkrieser Berg, in the municipality of Bramsche. Probably founded in the 13th century by the von Bar family, who have owned it ever since, it burned down in 1651 and was rebuilt as a four-winged manor house. What remains today includes the 1689 gatehouse with its octagonal timber-framed tower, the main residence, the former stables and a coach house.

What to know

  • The grounds can only be viewed from the outside, as the buildings themselves are not open to visitors.
  • The property is inhabited and partly privately run, which is why there is no public access to the interior.
  • No opening hours or admission fees apply since it is an exterior site that can be viewed freely from the surrounding paths.
  • The site lies close to the Kalkriese archaeological park, making it easy to combine both visits.
  • Because the complex sits on a moated island, visitors need to walk around the perimeter to take in its shape.
