Schloss Hünnefeld stands in Bad Essen, in the district of Osnabrück, between the hamlets of Harpenfeld and Wehrendorf, on the site of a moated stronghold first recorded in 1146. The present building was erected in the early seventeenth century by Gerhard Clamor von dem Bussche and his wife Hedwig, née von Münchhausen, taking Schloss Schwöbber, her family's seat, as a model. Surrounded by a double moat and set within a nineteenth century landscape park, the estate is still owned by the von dem Bussche-Hünnefeld family, who occupy part of it privately.
