To make a day of it

Turmhügel Burglesau stands in Scheßlitz (Landkreis Bamberg), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

The Turmhügel Burglesau is a vanished medieval motte located south of the village of Burglesau, a district of Scheßlitz in the Bamberg district of Bavaria. No historical or archaeological records document its construction or its lords, and only its shape, an oval mound roughly 20 by 10 metres surrounded by a ditch, allows a rough medieval dating. The site sits on a rocky spur, naturally shielded to the north by a steep drop toward the valley of the Burglesauer Bächlein stream, and to the south by a ten metre wide transverse ditch. Today only this earthwork remains, with no visible built structure.

What to know

  • No opening hours, admission fee or developed access are documented, this is an open-air site with no known visitor infrastructure.
  • Reaching it, on a rocky spur south of the village of Burglesau, means walking over natural terrain.
