To make a day of it

Tötungsanstalt Grafeneck stands in Gomadingen (Landkreis Reutlingen), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Tötungsanstalt Grafeneck stands on the site of a former Schloss, built during the Renaissance over the remains of a medieval Burg and later enlarged in the mid-18th century into a baroque summer residence for the dukes of Württemberg. In 1940 the estate became one of the places where the Nazi regime murdered more than ten thousand disabled or mentally ill people under the so-called euthanasia programme. Today the site holds a memorial and documentation centre dedicated to these victims, along with an open-air chapel created in 1990 for remembrance. Since 1928 it has also continued to serve as a facility run by the Samariterstiftung diaconal foundation.

What to know

  • The site functions primarily as a memorial and documentation centre rather than a castle open for its architecture.
  • The visit includes an open-air chapel and the exhibition rooms of the documentation centre.
  • Guided tours led by young guides are occasionally offered on site.
  • The estate lies in a rural setting on the Swabian Alb plateau, in Baden-Württemberg.
  • Part of the grounds is still used today by the Samariterstiftung foundation as a facility for people with disabilities.
