To make a day of it

Schnabelsburg stands in Nordhausen (Landkreis Nordhausen), in Thuringia, Germany. No visits are on record for this building.

The Schnabelsburg once stood on a rocky spur of the Kohnstein, near the village of Salza-Obersalza within the municipality of Nordhausen. Built from 1366 by the counts of Hohnstein to keep watch over the free imperial city of Nordhausen, it was destroyed as early as 1368, only two years after construction began. A forest inn later occupied the site until the mid-20th century, erasing what little remained of the stronghold. Today only a remnant of the castle's ditch survives as evidence of its existence.

What to know

  • Only a remnant of the ditch survives from the Schnabelsburg; no standing structure can be seen today.
  • The site lies on a spur of the Kohnstein, near Salza-Obersalza, in a wooded setting.
  • There are no opening hours, fees, or accessibility details, as this is not a developed visitor site.
  • Visiting is more a matter of hiking or historical curiosity than touring an intact castle.
