To make a day of it

Schloss Wahn stands in Wahn (Köln), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Schloss Wahn stands in the Cologne district of Wahn, its three baroque wings arranged around a courtyard reached by a stone bridge and a historic gate. The site began as a moated medieval stronghold, but what visitors see today dates mostly from the mid 18th century rebuilding commissioned by the counts of Schall. Since the 1950s the main house has held the University of Cologne's theatre studies collection, one of the largest of its kind worldwide. The park, the courtyard and the family burial chapel of the von Eltz-Rübenach can be seen, while the historic reception rooms are used for university events and weddings rather than public tours.

What to know

  • The courtyard and surrounding park can be approached without a dedicated entrance ticket.
  • The historic ground-floor rooms are not freely open to visitors, being used for university events and weddings instead.
  • The theatre collection housed inside belongs to the University of Cologne and is not run as a public exhibition in the usual museum sense.
  • The site is listed as a Baudenkmal in North Rhine-Westphalia.
  • The von Eltz-Rübenach family burial chapel stands within the castle grounds.
