To make a day of it

Burg Lohmar stands in Lohmar (Rhein-Sieg-Kreis), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. No visits are on record for this building.

Burg Lohmar is a former moated castle (Wasserburg) standing in the valley floor of the Agger river, set apart from the centre of Lohmar between the river and the A3 motorway. Its Gothic residential building, built of greywacke, dates from the 14th century, while the timber-framed outer bailey, arranged in three wings, was added in the early 18th century. A stone gateway bearing the combined coats of arms of the von Groote and Coesfeld families marks the entrance to this outer bailey, in front of a masonry bridge crossing the remains of the former moat, now dry. Still privately owned and used as a working farm, the castle can only be viewed from the outside.

What to know

  • Burg Lohmar can only be viewed from the outside, as the grounds are a private working farm.
  • It lies roughly half a kilometre west of Lohmar's town centre, between the Agger river and the A3 motorway.
  • There are no opening hours, admission fees or organised access, since the site is privately owned and not open for interior visits.
  • The place is not set up for visitors, so plan on simply observing the exterior from outside the grounds.
