Schloss Rain am Lech stands at the northern edge of the old town of Rain, in the Donau-Ries district. Built between 1392 and 1421 by the Wittelsbach dukes Stephen III and Louis VII, it marks the end of the duchy of Bavaria-Ingolstadt with the latter's death. The structure seen today, altered repeatedly over the centuries, forms a single wing divided into three sections, with a crenellated gable and an oriel window on its western side. It now houses local associations and the city's cultural hall.

What to know

  • The building now houses local associations and the city's cultural hall, so it is not set up for general public visits like a typical monument.
  • It is listed as a Baudenkmal in Bavaria.
  • Of the original moated complex, only the main building remains, as the moats were filled in during 1960.
  • The original east wing was demolished in 1890 and later rebuilt in a smaller form.
