To make a day of it

Burg Niederhaus stands in Ederheim (Landkreis Donau-Ries), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Burg Niederhaus is a ruined hilltop castle from the Hohenstaufen era, standing at 490 metres above the Kartäusertal valley near Ederheim in Bavaria. Built in the 12th century as the ancestral seat of the lords of Hürnheim, it was deliberately left to decay as a picturesque ruin during the 19th century. Visitors can still make out a keep shortened from its original height, the remains of a residential hall, and an unusually deep double moat system. Nearby stands a farmstead still in use today, a rare surviving link between a castle and its working estate.

What to know

  • The site is a freely accessible ruin in the Kartäusertal valley, with no known opening hours or ticketing.
  • Reaching the ruin requires a walk uphill to the rocky plateau where it stands.
  • The keep, now 23 metres tall, is about seven metres shorter than its original height.
  • The neighbouring farmstead is a working agricultural estate and is not part of the visit.
  • The site suits a combined walk with the Burgruine Hochhaus, about one kilometre away.
