Schloss Kapfenburg stands on a rocky spur at the northern edge of the Härtsfeld, above the town of Lauchheim. Once a commandery of the Teutonic Order established in the 14th century, the building largely owes its present appearance to construction work carried out between 1715 and 1719, which turned the medieval stronghold into a stately residence. Part of the complex now houses a local history museum.
