To make a day of it
Burgruine Rosenstein stands in Heubach (Ostalbkreis), in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Burg Rosenstein is a ruined hilltop castle standing on a rocky spur about 1500 metres east of Heubach, on the edge of the Swabian Jura escarpment. Built in the mid thirteenth century by local lesser nobility, it passed through several lordly hands before being given up as a residence in the early sixteenth century and gradually falling into decay. Today only the west wall of the great hall survives, pierced by four windows, along with a rock cut ditch and a nineteenth century iron footbridge that replaced the former drawbridge. The outer bailey and main castle area are freely accessible, in a setting that once drew Romantic poets such as Ludwig Uhland.
What to know
- Access to the outer bailey and main site is free, with no opening hours or ticket.
- The ruin sits on a rocky height, so reaching it involves a walk over natural, uneven ground.
- Only the west wall of the great hall still stands, the rest survives as foundations and wall remnants.
- A nineteenth century iron footbridge crosses the main ditch to reach the heart of the ruin.
- The site lies on the Staufer Route and close to a cave known as the Kleine Scheuer.
