Schloss Hellenstein rises above the town of Heidenheim an der Brenz on a limestone outcrop that carries both a medieval stronghold and a Renaissance castle built alongside it. Founded in the late 11th century by the lords of Hellenstein, the old fortress passed through several hands before coming under the rule of the dukes of Württemberg in the early 16th century. Burned down in 1530 and later rebuilt, it was extended under Duke Frederick I with a new residence and a court church designed by Heinrich Schickhardt. The buildings now house museums devoted to local history and historic transport.
