The Ruine Herwartstein sits on a spur 570 meters above the Brenz valley near Königsbronn. Only foundations, uncovered during the 20th century, remain of this former hilltop castle, yet its past is tied closely to the Staufer dynasty: built in stone as early as the 11th century under the early Staufers, it later passed to the counts of Helfenstein before being captured and badly damaged in 1287 by the forces of King Rudolf I of Habsburg. Sold in 1302 to King Albert I, the castle was dismantled in 1310, its stones reused to build the nearby Cistercian abbey of Königsbronn. Since 1997, the ruins have been marked as a stop along the Staufer Route.
