Brenz Castle stands at Sontheim an der Brenz, on a hill occupied since Roman times, where an ancient estate gave way in turn to an Alemannic and then a Frankish residence, and to a fortified seat from as early as the tenth or eleventh century. The building seen today results from a rebuilding carried out between 1667 and 1672 for the widowed duchess Juliane of Württemberg, after the earlier structure was destroyed during the Thirty Years' War. It now houses a local heritage museum covering regional history and the paleontology of the Swabian Jura, with displays including the former knights' hall.
