Burg Flochberg is a ruined hilltop castle overlooking the limestone edge of the Ries basin, above the Schloßberg district of Bopfingen. Large sections of wall survive from the once extensive medieval stronghold, including remains of the hall building and a nearly square keep with walls over two metres thick. The site was the scene of a battle mentioned in a 1150 letter from King Conrad III, and later served as an administrative seat for the Counts of Oettingen before being badly damaged during the Thirty Years' War.

What to know

  • Reaching the site involves a walk uphill to the top of the promontory.
  • There are no set opening hours or admission fees, as the site is freely accessible.
  • The ground is uneven, with wall fragments and sometimes unstable footing, so caution is advised.
