Schloss Ortenburg stands above the Wolfach valley, on the site of an earlier stronghold founded in 1120 by Count Rapoto I of Ortenburg. The building seen today largely dates from works carried out between 1562 and 1575 under Count Joachim von Ortenburg, who also introduced the Reformation into this immediate county of the Empire. A former ancestral hall, converted into a chapel in 1697, still preserves its Renaissance ceiling of painted maple marquetry. The grounds now include a museum, an inn, a wildlife park and a field used for jousting events and concerts.
