To make a day of it
Schloss Neu-Ortenburg stands in Ortenburg (Landkreis Passau), in Bavaria, Germany. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Schloss Neu-Ortenburg no longer exists as a standing building: it was a former castle site, now vanished, at Ortenburg in Bavaria. For centuries it served as a secondary residence of the counts of Ortenburg, used especially by younger sons and by the widows of the comital family. Nothing remains above ground today, and only the local place name, Hinterschloß, still points to its former location.
What to know
- No visible structure of the castle remains, only the place name Hinterschloß marks its former site.
- The site is recorded as an archaeological ground monument (Bodendenkmal) rather than a building open for visits.
- The last remnants, a cellar and a single piece of wall, were removed in 1862.
- There is no information on opening hours, fees, or accessibility since no building survives to visit.
- A former path linking the site to the market church in Ortenburg, laid out by Countess Lucia, is still partly traceable.
