Burg Saldenburg crowns a hilltop in the Dreiburgenland region of Bavaria, its bulky silhouette visible for miles across the surrounding hills and valleys, earning it the local nickname of the 'forest lantern'. Construction began in 1368 as a rectangular keep, and the building was later reworked in baroque style in the late 17th century by the architect Enrico Zuccalli. Inside survive a baroque chapel from the 17th century dedicated to the Three Kings, a knights' hall with a painted ceiling, and a vaulted gothic hall. The building now houses a youth hostel and is otherwise only open to the public during an annual Christmas event.
