To make a day of it
Schloss Fürstenstein stands in Fürstenstein (Landkreis Passau), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Schloss Fürstenstein rises on a rocky outcrop of the Bavarian Forest above the village that bears its name, roughly seventy metres over the road junction at its foot. The present building, which grew out of a medieval fortress transformed into a schloss in the late 16th century, is divided into a lower schloss with three massive round towers and an upper schloss reached by an outdoor staircase. Gutted by fire in the mid 19th century and later rebuilt, it served for decades as a boarding school run by a religious order before becoming, after a renovation started in 2007, a venue for events and cultural gatherings. Visits are currently limited to the exterior, as the building only opens to the public for occasional events.
What to know
- The interior cannot be visited except during occasional events, only the exterior can be seen at other times.
- The schloss stands on a height, so reaching it on foot means an uphill walk from the village.
- An adjoining parish church, which grew out of the former castle chapel, can be visited separately.
- The site is listed as a Baudenkmal in Bavaria.
- No opening hours or admission fees are published for this site.
