The Burgruine Hilgartsberg stands on a rocky spur overlooking the Danube valley, above the market town of Hofkirchen. First mentioned in the early 12th century, it passed through many hands before being burned down in 1742 during the War of the Austrian Succession and was never rebuilt. Visitors today find a triangular layout with gate towers, a well preserved Romanesque castle chapel dedicated to St George, and a deep well linked to an underground passage. The ruin also commands a wide view over the Danube valley.

The site is an open-air ruin, without an original roof or furnishings, except for the restored chapel.
St George's chapel, built against the ring wall, keeps interior fittings mostly from the 16th century and a Rococo-era altar.
