To make a day of it

Burgruine Neuenbuchberg stands in Hohenau (Landkreis Freyung-Grafenau), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

The Burgruine Neuenbuchberg sits on a rocky spur at 560 metres above sea level, on the southern slope of the Buchberg hill, almost entirely encircled by the winding Wolfsteiner Ohe stream. What survives of this medieval stronghold are fragments of the outer wall, rubble scattered within the grounds, a vaulted cellar and defensive ditches. Nearby, across a shallow dip in the land, lies the site of the older Burg Wildenstein.

What to know

  • The site is an open-air ruin with no enclosed building or exhibition to visit.
  • Reaching it involves a footpath up to the spur, so sturdy footwear is advisable given the uneven ground.
  • Only scattered remains survive, wall fragments, rubble and a vaulted cellar, so visitors should expect a modest site rather than an intact castle.
  • The nearby site of Burg Wildenstein makes it possible to combine both locations in a single outing.
