To make a day of it

Burgstall Wildenstein stands in Hohenau (Landkreis Freyung-Grafenau), in Bavaria, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Recorded dating: 13th century. No visits are on record for this building.

Burgstall Wildenstein marks the site of a vanished medieval hilltop castle, on a spur overlooking the Wolfsteiner Ohe near Buchberg, part of the municipality of Hohenau. Built around 1200 by the Bishop of Passau Wolfger von Ellenbrechtskirchen to secure the abbey's territory, it was rebuilt in 1308 and granted in 1369 to the von Puchberg family, who renamed it Altenbuchberg. Only two ditches and the Church of St. Erasmus, erected in the mid 17th century on the former castle chapel, remain today.

What to know

  • No standing walls remain of the fortress, only ditches and earthworks mark the site.
  • The Church of St. Erasmus stands at the tip of the former castle spur and can be visited as a place of worship.
  • A local road connecting Buchberg and Buchbergmühle now runs through the former outer ditch.
  • The mostly wooded terrain also includes some modern houses.
  • Another ruin, Neuenbuchberg, lies about 280 metres to the southwest, separated by a hollow.
