To make a day of it

Schloss Nöthnitz stands in Bannewitz (Landkreis Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge), in Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Schloss Nöthnitz stands in the village of Bannewitz, on the southern edge of Dresden, on grounds inhabited since the Middle Ages. The building seen today, a three-wing horseshoe layout with an octagonal stair tower, dates largely from around 1630. Its historical weight comes from Count Heinrich von Bünau, who housed his vast private library here in the eighteenth century, employing Johann Joachim Winckelmann, later regarded as the founder of scientific archaeology, as his librarian. The surrounding park still shows traces of both a baroque garden and an English-style landscape layout.

What to know

  • The schloss is privately owned and not regularly open to visitors.
  • The Bünau library and the Winckelmann memorabilia have left the site; related collections are now found in Stendal and in Bannewitz.
  • Restoration work is underway on the building, including the south wing's roof and a wall of the north wing.
  • The surrounding park still retains elements of a baroque garden and an English-style landscape park.
  • No public opening hours, fees or access conditions are published for this site.
