To make a day of it

Schloss Merode stands in Langerwehe (Kreis Düren), in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.

Schloss Merode stands in Langerwehe, in the Kreis Düren, at the northern edge of the Rureifel, and has belonged to the von Merode family, today princes of Merode, since 1174. Surrounded by a moat, this Renaissance-style water castle took its present form through building work carried out by Field Marshal Jean Philippe Eugène de Merode-Westerloo in the early eighteenth century, followed by further alterations between 1834 and 1838. Heavily damaged during the Second World War, it suffered another major fire in 2000 that destroyed much of its roof structure and the family's private archive. Still a private residence of the princely family, the castle cannot be visited inside, though its park occasionally hosts public events.
