Schloss Ludwigseck stands on a wooded hill on the edge of Ludwigsau, in Hesse, above the Rohrbach valley. Built in the early 15th century as a stronghold for Landgrave Louis I of Hesse, it ranks among the last fortified castles erected in Germany. Devastated during the Thirty Years' War, it was rebuilt as a manor house around 1677, then restored and remodelled in a historicist style in the mid 19th century by architect Hugo von Ritgen. Privately owned by the von und zu Gilsa family, it is not open to visitors.
