Schloss Hardenberg is the private residence of the counts of Hardenberg, built between 1701 and 1710 by master builder Georg Sigismund Schmidt of Hanover, at the western foot of the Burgberg, some 600 metres from the Burgruine Hardenberg. The baroque manor house was occupied from around 1710, once the older nearby fortress had become too dilapidated to serve as a dwelling. At the end of the 18th century, Christiane von Reventlow, wife of Karl August von Hardenberg, had a park of about one hundred Morgen laid out around the house. The Schloss itself remains a private home, but its park and the ruined castle nearby can be seen on guided tours.
