To make a day of it
Burg Hardenberg stands in Nörten-Hardenberg (Landkreis Northeim), in Lower Saxony, Germany. The building is a listed Baudenkmal. Its opening hours and prices have not been verified at the source yet.
Burg Hardenberg is a ruined rock castle standing on a steep rocky outcrop at Nörten-Hardenberg, originally founded by the Archbishopric of Mainz to watch over two trade routes. Unusually for its time, it developed as a double castle, split into a Vorderhaus and a Hinterhaus occupied by two branches of the von Hardenberg family, bound by a mutual peace agreement. Visitors can still make out the remains of both dwellings, separated by a ditch, along with a neo-Gothic style tower added in the nineteenth century. The comital von Hardenberg family, owners since the Middle Ages, still manages the site today.
What to know
- The ruin can only be visited with supervision due to the poor state of the structure.
- Climbing the lookout tower is possible only as part of a guided tour.
- Access to the site is only possible from the north, crossing the old moat.
- The site is listed as a Baudenkmal in Lower Saxony.
- The owning family also runs a nearby hotel estate and a distillery, which are separate from a visit to the ruin itself.
