Glücksburg Castle rises from an island surrounded by water at the head of the Flensburg Firth. Built during the Renaissance on the site of a former Cistercian monastery, it ranks among the best preserved buildings of that period in northern Europe. It served as the seat of the ducal House of Glücksburg and, at various times, as a residence of the Danish royal family. The building now houses a museum dedicated to this dynastic history.
