Gottorf Castle stands on an island in the Schlei at Schleswig, in Schleswig-Holstein. Once the seat of the bishops and later the dukes of Schleswig, the medieval stronghold was transformed over eight centuries into a Renaissance fortress and then a Baroque palace. It gave its name to the House of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf, whose descendants included several Swedish kings and Russian tsars, and today houses two regional museums of Schleswig-Holstein. North of the building lies the reconstructed Neuwerk garden, among the earliest Baroque terraced gardens in northern Europe.
